British comedian and actor Russell Brand was found guilty by a jury in London on Thursday of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault. The verdicts relate to allegations that date back more than 20 years, marking the conclusion of a high-profile trial that drew significant public attention.
Brand, who is 51 years old, had maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings. He argued that the incidents in question were either consensual or had been reinvented and re-imagined by the complainants. Prior to the trial, the former husband of US singer Katy Perry was free on bail, but the court rejected a request to keep him out of custody due to concerns he might flee. As a result, he was taken into custody following the verdict.
Presiding Judge Joel Bennathan indicated that Brand should expect a significant custodial term. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Monday. During the proceedings, the judge acknowledged the difficulty the situation has caused for Brand’s children. However, he noted that the hardship was a direct consequence of serious criminal offending by their father.
Prosecutors characterized Brand as a ruthless, calculating, and manipulative sexual predator. Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of the London Metropolitan Police praised the women who came forward, calling the conviction a testament to their courage and resilience. Furphy stated that Brand utilized his influence, status, and fame to exploit women, and that his sense of entitlement grew as his public profile expanded.
In his defense, Brand testified that he had been obsessed with sex as a young man and had led a promiscuous life. However, he insisted that he had never forced anyone to do anything against their will. He described the criminal case as having a devastating impact on his personal life and family, stating that his entire existence had been consumed by the allegations and accusations.
Brand’s legal team argued that the defense was weakened because the alleged victims only reported the assaults to the police years after the events. They noted that this delay followed the broadcast of a 2023 documentary that featured anonymous allegations against the comedian. Brand also testified that friends and colleagues had abandoned him during the trial.
Laura Brand, his wife, accompanied him to court and testified as a character witness. However, Brand noted that no other witnesses with relevant evidence were willing to testify on his behalf. The jury, composed of eight men and four women at Southwark Crown Court, spent more than eight hours over two days deliberating before reaching their decision.
In addition to the convictions, the jury acquitted Brand of two counts of rape and one count of attempted indecent assault. According to an AFP report, Brand closed his eyes but showed no visible emotion as the verdicts were read out in the courtroom.
