Formula One drivers and teams head into the final five races of the 2026 season with the championship math heavily favoring one name. Kimi Antonelli won the United States Grand Prix on Sunday at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, to solidify his position at the top of the drivers' standings.
The 20-year-old Italian, driving for Mercedes, started from pole position and finished the 56-lap race in 1:35:16.650. It was his ninth victory of the season. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari finished second, crossing the line 13.078 seconds behind Antonelli. Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing took third place, stopping the clock 17.485 seconds after the winner.
The result extends Antonelli's lead over his Mercedes teammate George Russell to 123 points. With five races remaining, Russell must win the next event in Mexico City to remain in contention. If he fails to take that victory, the championship title will go to Antonelli. This is Antonelli's second season in Formula One, and he has established dominance throughout the year.
Strategy determined the outcome of the race. Most teams utilized two pit stops, but Antonelli stayed on track until lap 25. He made a single stop and completed the rest of the race without returning to the pit lane. Antonelli credited the team for trusting his judgment. "It was a perfect way to end the weekend; it was an incredible team effort, especially from strategy to believe in me and go for one stop," he said.
A virtual safety car was deployed on lap 52 after Valtteri Bottas's Cadillac stopped on the track. The safety car remained in effect until the penultimate lap, preventing any late-race challenges to Antonelli's lead. Verstappen, who has won every world title from 2021 to 2024, is now mathematically out of the fight for this year's crown. He will go two years without a world championship. "Our overall pace was not good enough, and the tyres we had available were not the right ones," Verstappen said.
Mercedes also extended its lead in the constructors' standings. The team now holds 607 points, which is 133 points ahead of Ferrari's 474. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff described the performance as the best race Antonelli has produced. "The race of a champion who isn't the champion yet, but exceptional," Wolff said. He noted that Antonelli controlled the race despite starting with the inferior tire compound.
Antonelli has won both United States races on the calendar this year. The next event is the Las Vegas Grand Prix in November. When asked about the proximity of the title, Antonelli stated, "I'm aware [securing the championship] is close, but the mindset doesn't change. I want to finish the season on a high, to go into 2027 with high hopes."
