The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the New York Islanders 5-3 on Thursday night. William Carrier scored the go-ahead goal in the third period to end the game.
Carolina built an early advantage by scoring on two of their first three shots. Logan Stankoven opened the scoring after Anthony Duclair and Jean-Gabriel Pageau over-skated a loose puck. Stankoven sent a wrist shot past Semyon Varlamov, with Jackson Blake providing the assist. Blake extended his point streak to eight games.
Jordan Martinook found Jesperi Kotkaniemi behind the defense for a redirect to make it 2-0. Kotkaniemi's goal came just over three minutes into the first period. The Islanders responded quickly in the second period. Mitchell Chaffee redirected a shot from Brayden Schenn for his first goal of the season. Schenn then added a wraparound goal less than two minutes later to tie the score.
Andrei Svechnikov restored the Carolina lead with a goal from a Sebastian Aho pass. Viktor Eklund answered with a one-timer from the slot to make it 3-3. The score remained tied until late in the third period. Aho shot from the left wall, and Carrier buried the rebound with 5:08 remaining. Jalen Chatfield added an empty-net goal in the final minute.
Brandon Bussi made 24 saves for Carolina. Varlamov made 34 saves for New York. Aho recorded two assists. The Hurricanes have now won four of their last five games. The Islanders dropped their second straight match.
New York signed veteran defenseman Ben Hutton to a one-year contract on Thursday. Hutton, 33, joined the team on a professional tryout on Monday. He finished the previous season with the Vegas Golden Knights, recording 15 points in 55 games.
The Hurricanes will host the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday. The Islanders will host the New Jersey Devils on Saturday.
