Sarah Michelle Gilley-Wroe will spend the rest of her life in prison without the chance of parole. A Texas jury reached this verdict on Friday for the 24-year-old woman convicted of the capital murder of her infant daughter. The sentencing followed a trial that centered on the death of a five-week-old baby in May 2022.

The child died on May 11, 2022, at Midland Memorial Hospital. Medical records cited severe head trauma as the cause of death. Investigators noted that the infant had two fractures in the back of her skull. Forensic experts determined that the injuries matched blunt force trauma patterns.

During the investigation, detectives examined Gilley-Wroe’s phone and found Google searches they deemed incriminating. While in custody, Gilley-Wroe made statements to a cellmate that further supported the prosecution's case. She admitted to throwing the baby against a wall and striking the child until the crying stopped.

Authorities established that Gilley-Wroe was the only person alone with the infant during the window when the crimes occurred. Despite this, she argued that other family members or the family dog could have caused the harm. Specifically, she pointed to her aunt, the baby’s father, and the pet as possible sources of the injury.

Medical experts provided context on the severity of the blow. They equated the force required to create the skull fractures to the impact of a fall from a two-story building. This technical assessment helped the jury understand the magnitude of the trauma inflicted on the infant.

The jury returned a guilty verdict on one count of capital murder of a child under 10 years old. The court then imposed the mandatory life sentence. Gilley-Wroe will now serve her time in a Texas state prison facility.
