Indiana enters Week 10 as the No. 4 team in the first College Football Playoff rankings, yet the defending national champions have struggled to match their previous dominance. The Hoosiers started the season against Group of Six and FCS opponents, then went 5-1 in Big Ten play. Four of those conference wins were one-score games, with three requiring fourth-quarter comebacks.

Head coach Curt Cignetti addressed the conference's standing during his Wednesday night radio show. He argued that the SEC receives disproportionate attention from ESPN writers, a dynamic he believes influences the committee. "SEC gets a lot of love from ESPN and all their writers that they don't technically pay but march to their drum," Cignetti said. He noted that this preference keeps two-loss Big Ten teams from ranking as high as SEC teams.

Cignetti, who has been inactive on social media since a sponsored post in early September, broke his silence to share a screenshot of a CBS Sports list. The list, compiled by Brad Crawford, ranks teams by wins over opponents with winning records. Indiana leads the list with five such wins. Cignetti captioned the post with the phrase "facts are stubborn things."

The Hoosiers have defeated North Texas, Northwestern, Nebraska, Michigan, and Minnesota. These opponents all held winning records at the time of the games. Indiana has played only one ranked opponent this season, Ohio State, who also took the team's sole loss. This lack of high-profile wins has fueled debate about the team's resume.

The Big Ten has faced criticism this season due to inconsistent performances from top contenders. Oregon has had a difficult year, while Ohio State struggles with quarterback uncertainty. USC has shown volatility, and Indiana faces offensive questions. UCLA remains the only undefeated team in the conference, though it has not yet tested its status against an elite opponent. This collection of issues has prevented any Big Ten team from commanding the same respect as top SEC programs.

Indiana has a bye week this week before hosting No. 20 USC on November 14. The game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS. USC will also be off a bye after defeating Ohio State last Saturday. A comfortable win over a quality opponent could help quiet the noise surrounding Indiana's schedule.

Cignetti plans to continue advocating for his conference in the meantime. He wants to apply pressure on the selection committee to ensure Big Ten teams receive fair consideration for the playoff. The Hoosiers will return to action in two weeks, with the outcome of that game potentially shaping their path forward.
