The Google Home Speaker is currently available for approximately $79 at Best Buy, Walmart, and Target. This price represents a $20 reduction from the standard cost and stands as the lowest price recorded for the device since it launched in June 2026. The offer applies to all four available color options.

This price cut coincides with the speaker’s introduction as Google’s first new hardware entry in the smart speaker category after several years of inactivity. The device is designed to be smaller than its predecessor, the Nest Audio. This reduction in physical size allows users to place the unit in various parts of a home without it dominating the available surface area.

Audio performance remains the primary focus of the hardware. David Pierce, who conducted comparative testing, found that the new speaker produces cleaner, louder, and sharper sound than the Amazon Echo Dot Max. While the older Nest Audio still offers superior overall audio quality, the new model provides a more compact form factor at a slightly lower price point. Jennifer Pattison Tuohy noted in her review that the speaker balances sound quality, dimensions, and design effectively.

Tuohy expressed a preference for the Amazon device, citing its fuller sound profile and stronger bass response. However, she acknowledged that the Google speaker delivers loud and clear audio with 360-degree projection. The device serves as a central hub for smart home ecosystems by supporting the Matter protocol and including a Thread border router. These features enable users to connect and control a wide range of compatible devices.

The Home Speaker is the first model in the lineup to function as an audio output device for the Google TV Streamer 4K. This capability allows users to route television audio through one or two speakers instead of relying on the TV's built-in sound system. Tuohy reported that this functionality provided clear dialogue during testing, though sound quality varied depending on the specific content being viewed.

Support for Gemini, Google’s advanced AI model, defines the software experience. The system is more effective than the legacy Google Assistant at interpreting natural language and handling complex requests. Tuohy found that the system could process multiple smart home commands simultaneously. For example, it adjusted the air conditioning when she mentioned feeling too hot.

Response times can sometimes be slow or unreliable. Certain advanced features are not included in the base purchase price. Google Home Premium, which costs $10 per month, is required for functionalities such as Gemini Live. This subscription allows for extended conversations with the assistant without the need to repeat the wake word.

The current 20 percent discount offers a lower entry point for buyers considering the device. The combination of improved AI features, smart home connectivity, and competitive pricing positions the speaker as a distinct option in the current market.
