Harry Kane won the 2026 Ballon d'Or on Monday night, ending a long wait for football's top individual prize. The Bayern Munich and England forward accepted the trophy in London, marking a milestone in his career as he joins an elite group of recipients. He is the first Englishman to hold the award since Michael Owen in 2001.
Kane's victory rests on a statistical campaign that dominated the 2025-26 season. He scored 61 goals in 51 appearances for Bayern across all competitions. His total for club and country reached 73 goals, a figure that outpaced other finalists. These numbers helped Bayern secure the domestic league and cup titles, a double that had eluded him in previous years.
His international performance added weight to his case. During the World Cup, Kane scored six goals and led England to the semi-finals. His role combined finishing with leadership, reinforcing his status as the team's primary option in high-pressure matches.
The competition was stiff. Kylian Mbappe set new World Cup scoring records, and Lamine Yamal guided Spain to the World Cup title. Despite these achievements, voters selected Kane for his sustained output throughout the entire season rather than a single tournament surge.
Kane, 33, expressed relief and gratitude upon taking the stage. "Wow, wow, wow!" he said. "I am almost speechless. Being here in London makes it extra special. It feels like a good omen for me tonight. Thank you to everyone who voted for me. I can imagine it was tough this year."
He acknowledged the caliber of the other nominees. "Some world-class players in the room tonight," Kane added. "Congratulations to all the winners and nominees tonight, and an impressive showing of determination and hard work can really achieve."
The men's award was part of a ceremony that also recognized women's football. Alexia Putellas, the Spanish midfielder, won the Ballon d'Or Féminin for the third time. She earned the honor after helping Barcelona complete a treble in the 2025-26 campaign and win the Spanish Super Cup. Putellas left Barcelona in July after 14 years to join London City Lionesses in the Women's Super League.
Kane's profile now includes the Ballon d'Or alongside his existing records as England's all-time leading marksman and record World Cup scorer. His move to Bayern in 2023 shifted his trajectory, transforming a period of loan spells and struggles at Tottenham into a run of consistent trophy success and prolific scoring.
