HBO has completed the casting for the primary supernatural entities in the first season of its Harry Potter series. The network announced on social media that five new performers will voice or portray the ghosts and the Sorting Hat.
Leo Bill will play Nearly Headless Nick. Andrew Brooke has been cast as the Bloody Baron, and Daniel Fearn will take the role of the Fat Friar. Laura Smyth will portray the Fat Lady, while David Threlfall will provide the voice of the Sorting Hat.
These characters hold specific functions within Hogwarts. The three ghosts and the portrait of the Fat Lady control access to the Gryffindor dormitory, admitting students only when the correct password is spoken. The Sorting Hat determines the house placement for new students at the school.
The first season, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is scheduled to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on Christmas Day 2026. Dominic McLaughlin stars as Harry Potter, with Alastair Stout and Arabella Stanton playing Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.
HBO renewed the series for a second season on May 6, 2026. This decision occurred months before the release of the first season. J.K. Rowling serves as an executive producer for the show, which is described as a faithful adaptation of her books.
