Law enforcement officials in Des Moines, Iowa, reported that a suspect was in custody on Thursday following a shooting incident at the city's main post office. The event resulted in two individuals being shot and a third person sustaining injuries while attempting to flee the scene. Police indicated that none of the victims were believed to be in life-threatening condition.

Sergeant Paul Parizek provided details regarding the response to the incident, noting that officers arrived at the location within three minutes of the initial report. He stated that all three victims were transported to the hospital and were receiving care at the time of his statement. Reports of shots fired began to come in around 9:10 a.m. local time, with the shooting occurring on the second floor of the facility.

According to Sergeant Parizek, the suspect is a woman who was inside the postal facility at the time of the event. She has not yet been publicly identified by authorities. Video footage shared by CBS affiliate KCCI-TV showed officers rapidly converging on the scene to secure the area and attend to those involved.

The main post office is located just north of downtown Des Moines, directly across the street from one of the city's primary hospitals. The structure serves as a four-story regional sorting facility and includes a walk-in service counter that is accessible to the general public. The proximity of the building to medical services and the city center likely influenced the swift coordination of emergency services.

In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Des Moines Public Schools issued a social media update informing the public of the situation. The district explained that they were notified by police at 9:20 a.m. regarding the incident. Consequently, a nearby elementary school, a welcome center, and a nutrition center were placed in a secure status, which restricted entry and exit from the buildings to ensure safety.

The secure status at the school district facilities was lifted later in the morning after police informed the district at 10 a.m. that a suspect had been taken into custody. This timeline highlights the coordinated communication between local law enforcement and educational institutions during the active phase of the investigation.

Governor Kim Reynolds stated that she was in contact with the Department of Public Safety to monitor the developing situation. She posted online to confirm that the suspected shooter was in custody and that the investigation was ongoing. The governor expressed gratitude for the immediate response by law enforcement and offered prayers for everyone involved in the incident.

Senator Chuck Grassley also commented on the event via his social media account on X. He noted that he was following the news of the morning's shooting at the Main Post Office. The senator expressed gratitude to law enforcement and first responders for their quick actions to detain the shooter and treat the injured. He added that he and his wife, Barbara, were praying for all those impacted by the tragedy.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The Associated Press has reached out for further information as the case develops. The swift custody of the suspect and the non-life-threatening nature of the injuries have provided some reassurance to the community, though the investigation remains active to determine the full scope of the incident.

The incident has drawn attention to the security protocols of public-facing postal facilities in the region. With the suspect in custody and the victims receiving medical attention, officials are focusing on gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses to understand the events that led to the shooting on the second floor of the building.
