Democrat Eli Savit holds an early lead over Republican Doug Lloyd in the Michigan attorney general race as most polls close.

The election will determine the successor to Dana Nessel, a Democrat who is term-limited. Savit has served as Washtenaw County prosecutor since 2020. Lloyd spent more than two decades as a prosecutor in Eaton County, a politically divided mid-Michigan jurisdiction where he won reelection by appealing to moderate voters.

The two candidates present distinct policy platforms. Lloyd emphasizes his experience and a tough-on-crime stance. He supports repealing the state's red-flag gun law and wants the Legislature to pass a constitutional carry law that allows concealed carry without a permit. Savit favors criminal justice reform. He advocates for common sense gun laws, including bans on bump stocks and ghost guns, and supports Michigan's safe storage and red-flag statutes.

Savit stated he will focus on protecting consumers and fighting white-collar crimes such as wage theft, price gouging, and fraud. Lloyd highlighted his trusted leadership and proven experience during the campaign. Democrats argued that Lloyd would rubber-stamp decisions made in the final two years of President Donald Trump's administration.

Republicans criticized Savit for specific policies enacted during his tenure as county prosecutor. These actions included decriminalizing consensual sex work and psychedelic mushrooms, as well as limiting the use of cash bail.

Savit outraised Lloyd during the campaign cycle. He reported cumulative donations of $2.3 million compared to Lloyd's $1.2 million. Polling data showed the race remained in a statistical dead heat for much of the contest. More recent polls indicated Savit held a slight edge before the ballots were cast.

Most voting locations closed at 8 p.m. local time. Some polls in the Upper Peninsula remained open until 9 p.m. because they are in a different time zone.
