Deschutes County officials released the 911 audio recorded by Kaylub Giamanco on Oct. 15, the day he entered Silver Rail Elementary in Bend and fatally shot a teenager who had killed four people with a shotgun. The 79-second recording captures Giamanco's real-time approach to the school before he went inside.
While portions of the audio are garbled, the call largely supports the account Giamanco gave in a recent interview. In that conversation, he described himself as being in full panic as he drove toward the campus. On the recorded call, he tells the dispatcher, "Oh my God, someone's at my daughter's school with a gun. I have a gun, and I will shoot them right now if I have to."
The dispatcher instructed Giamanco to explain exactly what happened and to wait for an officer. Giamanco began shouting the school's name repeatedly, emphasizing that it was his daughter's school and that he was about to go in to kill the intruder. He stated that he was just driving home when he arrived and did not know the identity of the shooter.
As the call progressed, Giamanco expressed audible frustration. He identified the shooter's location as the south side of the building, shouting that he was entering the structure right then. He described the shooter as actively firing, prompting the dispatcher to ask for details on the suspect's race. At that moment, Giamanco's side of the line went silent.
In his earlier interview, Giamanco recalled telling the dispatcher, "I'm sorry, I have to go in. People are going to die." The county noted that not all of Giamanco's speech is audible on the released recording, so those specific words are not clearly heard on the tape. The dispatcher is heard asking for more information and stating that help was en route.
The call continued for several seconds after Giamanco began moving toward the building. Background noise from the dispatch center includes other calls coming in regarding the shooting. The release provides the public with a direct audio record of the father's state of mind in the final seconds before he entered the classroom.
