Law enforcement officers have taken a suspect into custody following a shooting at the main post office in Des Moines, Iowa. The incident occurred on Thursday morning, with police receiving reports of gunfire around 9:10 a.m. local time.
Two individuals were shot inside the building, while a third person was injured while attempting to leave the area. Sergeant Paul Parizek stated that all three victims were transported to the hospital and were currently receiving care. Police indicated that none of the injuries were considered life-threatening.
The post office serves as a four-story regional sorting facility located just north of downtown Des Moines. It sits across the street from one of the city's primary hospitals and includes a walk-in service counter for the public. Parizek noted that officers arrived at the scene within three minutes of the initial call.
Gov. Kim Reynolds confirmed she was coordinating with the Department of Public Safety. She posted online that the investigation continues and expressed gratitude for the quick response from law enforcement. Reynolds said the agency is monitoring the situation and sending prayers to those involved.
Des Moines Public Schools placed nearby elementary schools, a welcome center, and a nutrition center into a secure status after receiving police notification at 9:20 a.m. This measure restricted entry and exit from the buildings. The district lifted the secure status at 10 a.m. after police confirmed the suspect was in custody.
