Chad and Jeff Orr will perform their act Two Brothers One Mind at the Brumder Mansion this Friday, October 30, and Saturday, October 31. The brothers will hold two shows each day, starting at 7 p.m. and again at 9 p.m. Tickets are currently available for purchase.
The Orrs, who grew up between Milwaukee and Chicago, launched their act on July 7, 2007, at Venice Beach in Los Angeles. Both brothers had been working in the film industry in Los Angeles at the time. Jeff describes the preparation period, noting, "It took us about three years to construct the act."
Their performance style combines magic, comedy, and direct audience participation. Jeff interacts with the audience to collect items or observations, while Chad, often blindfolded, attempts to identify the details. The brothers design the routine to obscure any potential cheating, frequently having one of them leave the room during the climax. Jeff says, "We really are best friends and can play off each other really well, and we're good at working the audience, trying to bring out the funny in them to make them the star of the show."
In addition to the Halloween variety show, the duo maintains a regular schedule in Portland. They perform at The Laughing Tap on the third Thursday of every month. They also hold annual special shows for Christmas and Valentine's Day. Jeff notes that the entire production fits in a briefcase, which allows for easy transport and intimate venue setups.
Earlier this year, the brothers returned to Los Angeles to film a segment for the thirteenth season of Masters of Illusion. They were the first Wisconsin-based magicians featured on the program. Chad called the experience a dream come true. The segment is scheduled to air in the upcoming season.
During the summer, the Orrs spent several weeks performing on the MS American Patriot, a vessel operated by American Cruise Lines. This was the ship's first year sailing on the Great Lakes. Chad explained that the cruise line hires local entertainers at every port, and the company selected the brothers after reviewing their promotional video. The cruise line plans to quadruple their bookings next year and add them to new ships in the fleet.
The act has toured the country for nearly two decades, appearing at corporate events, colleges, clubs, and festivals. Jeff mentions that the show has built an organic local fan base, with returning attendees often bringing new friends to see the reactions.
