Miami opened at No. 1 in the first College Football Playoff rankings of the 2026 season, released this week. The Hurricanes, one of only three undefeated teams left in the sport, finished ahead of No. 2 Georgia and fellow unbeaten No. 3 Utah. No. 4 Indiana out of the Big Ten rounded out the top four, putting those programs in position to claim the four first round byes in the playoff bracket.
As has become customary, the selection committee gave the SEC a notable lift compared to the AP Top 25. Alabama came in at No. 5, several spots higher than its AP ranking, while Kentucky landed at No. 6 and Texas at No. 7, also well ahead of their AP positions. In all, four SEC teams cracked the top seven of the CFP rankings, compared to just one in the AP poll.
The most debated part of the bracket sits at the bottom. Notre Dame projects as the final team in the field as the No. 11 seed, while Ohio State is the first team out at No. 12. The Buckeyes were squeezed from the bracket by No. 25 Boise State, which would claim the automatic bid reserved for the top Group of Six champion. Under this scenario, the schools hosting first round games would be Alabama, Kentucky, Texas and No. 8 UCLA.
Notre Dame's margin for error is razor thin heading into Saturday. A season ago, the Fighting Irish were the first team left out of the playoff after going 10-2 with losses to two CFP teams, and their current position is even shakier. They already carry a loss to BYU and now face No. 1 Miami this weekend. A defeat there would leave them nearly certain to miss the postseason, especially after their remaining quality opponents, SMU and Wisconsin, both lost last weekend.
The committee's regard for the SEC reached a new level this year. Alabama ranked No. 5 despite two losses, and Kentucky and Texas also climbed well past their AP standing. Five SEC teams sit inside the projected 12 team field, and with Tennessee at No. 13 and LSU at No 14, the league is positioned to add more before the season ends.
The playoff will remain at 12 teams for at least one more season, but the rankings release renewed discussion about expansion. A 24 team projection published by Yahoo Sports showed the SEC placing nine teams in an expanded field, which would account for more than half of the conference's membership.
For now, the picture is clear at the top. Miami controls its own path as the nation's top ranked team, Georgia and Utah hold firm as unbeatens, and a heavy SEC presence frames the race heading into the final month of the regular season.
