Douglas County High School will forfeit three September wins due to a transfer violation, according to the Georgia High School Association (GHSA). Executive Director Tim Scott confirmed the decision on Thursday, stating the school will not appeal the ruling regarding two ineligible players.
The forfeited victories include games against Douglass, Rome, and Carver of Columbus. One of the two affected starters won his appeal, but the other did not. The ineligible player participated in all three games. The GHSA determined the player did not make a legal move into the new school district during the transfer process.
The losses change Douglas County's record to 2-6. In the Post Season Rankings for Class 7A, the team's standing fell from No. 18 to No. 36, based on calculations from Maxwell Ratings. The top 32 teams in each class qualify for the playoffs.
The decision creates a complex scenario for the final week of the regular season. Douglas County plays Cherokee County on Thursday. The Tigers currently hold a 10-9 record in the 2024 season. If they win, they remain in the playoffs. If they lose, they drop to 2-10 and must hope other teams lose to secure a spot.
Maxwell Ratings analyst Todd Holcomb noted the impact on the state rankings. Douglas County currently sits at No. 23 in Class 7A. A loss to Cherokee would move them to No. 28. A win would keep them at No. 23. The top 32 teams in each class make the playoffs.
The forfeit also affects the standing of other teams. Rome and Carver of Columbus gain the wins. Rome moves from No. 54 to No. 41. Carver moves from No. 39 to No. 36. Douglass moves from No. 9 to No. 9. The teams' regular season records remain unchanged, but their playoff seeding will shift based on the new win-loss totals.
