Nithya Raman has defeated incumbent Mayor Karen Bass in the Los Angeles mayoral election, according to a projection by NBC News released following the November 3 vote. The result ends Bass’s tenure as the city’s chief executive and positions Raman to take office on December 14, 2026.
At 45 years old, Raman will become the first democratic socialist to serve as mayor of Los Angeles. She served as a city council member for six years prior to this election. Her educational background includes a degree in social sciences from Harvard University and a degree in urban planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
During her campaign, Raman criticized Bass’s administration for its handling of public safety, the high cost of living, and the lack of sustainable policies to address the homelessness crisis. She presented herself as a departure from the city’s traditional political leadership.
Fernando Guerra, a political analyst and director of the Los Angeles Studies Center at Loyola Marymount University, noted that Raman’s limited executive experience could have been viewed as a weakness. Instead, her status as a new figure became a strength. Guerra explained that she positioned herself as a leftist alternative to the established Democratic institution.
Guerra compared the outcome to similar victories in cities such as New York and Seattle, where candidates affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America defeated traditional Democratic incumbents. He stated that these candidates ran against the Democratic establishment to win those seats.
Despite the projection, Guerra raised questions about the clarity of Raman’s policy proposals. He asserted that she has not yet provided a specific explanation of how she intends to improve the city’s conditions. The new mayor is scheduled to assume her duties on December 14, 2026.
