Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato have returned to the beauty market to capitalize on early 2000s nostalgia. Their new collaboration introduces The Delena: Soft Pinch Blush Bundle, a product line designed to target consumers who grew up with the pair’s Disney Channel roles. The bundle includes Rare Beauty’s Soft Pinch Liquid Blush in two specific shades, Hope and Virtue, along with a matching Soft Pinch Blush Brush. The products are currently available on the Rare Beauty website.
The commercial partnership builds on a personal history that spans nearly two decades. Gomez and Lovato first met as child actors on the set of Barney & Friends in the late 1990s. They rose to fame separately with Wizards of Waverly Place and Camp Rock, respectively. Fans coined the term Delena to describe their close friendship during that era. The pair co-starred in the 2009 Disney Channel Original Movie Princess Protection Program, a role that cemented their status as a duo in the public eye.
The relationship between the two stars experienced a period of distance in recent years. In a May 2020 interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Lovato stated that she was not close with Gomez at the time. She noted that while she retained love for her former friend, they were not in constant communication. The first public sign of a thaw in their relationship occurred in April of this year, when Gomez attended a concert on Lovato’s It’s Not That Deep Tour in Orlando.
The new campaign, titled Still Making Each Other Blush, visually replicates the movie poster from Princess Protection Program. The promotional materials include a four-minute video clip that mimics the style of YouTube vlogs the pair produced in 2008. In the footage, the two answer questions and perform a lip-sync to One and the Same, the song they recorded for the 2009 film soundtrack. Gomez described the music video shoot as a defining moment, saying, I felt like that was our moment when we felt like Avril Lavigne. Lovato added, And Kelly Clarkson. Always Kelly Clarkson.
Lovato addressed the current state of their friendship in a new interview with Elle. She explained that friends often go through different chapters of closeness and distance. She stated that she has always loved and adored Gomez. She expressed satisfaction in being able to collaborate professionally while also spending personal time together.
The release of the bundle marks the first major commercial venture for the pair since their 2009 film. The product line leverages the specific brand equity of their shared childhood fame. The availability of the set online allows for direct sales to the demographic that identified with their Disney Channel personas. The campaign serves as a direct commercial link between their past cultural impact and their present market presence.
