Shelburne Athlete: Flo Meiler Holds World Records at 91

Flo Meiler holds two world records in pole vault and triple jump at age 91. The athlete from Shelburne, Vermont, began competing in track and field 31 years ago. She has accumulated numerous medals, mostly gold with a few silver, which now fill her home.
Meiler first tried the long jump at the Vermont Senior Games at age 60. Her friend Barbara Jordan encouraged her to participate. Jordan died 10 years ago. Meiler said she misses her often. Despite the loss, Meiler continues to compete in track events.
Meiler admitted she is sad that her jumps are not as high as before. However, she said she still enjoys the activity. Other athletes often approach her to express their admiration. Meiler said she feels warm inside when they tell her she is an inspiration to them.
Jason Lei, a freshman at the University of Vermont, is one of the athletes inspired by Meiler. He told her he wants to be moving like her when he is older. Meiler said his comment makes her feel like she is 60 again. Her husband of 65 years, Gene Meiler, said she impressed him. He said that is why he married her.
Meiler adds extra exercises when she feels she is slowing down. She said she is happy to continue running the track. She credited God for giving her health and talent. The next scheduled event for Meiler was not specified in the report.
