The City and County of Honolulu will start replacing the pavement on a stretch of Kapiolani Boulevard next month. The work covers the segment from Atkinson Drive to Ward Avenue. The Department of Design and Construction expects the project to run for approximately 18 months.

Hiʻilawe Construction, LLC won the $9.9 million contract for the job. The crew will remove the existing asphalt and pour new pavement. They will also build new curbs, gutters, and sidewalks. Additional tasks include trimming trees and roots, adjusting manhole covers and utility boxes, and installing traffic signals, vehicle loop detectors, pavement striping, and signage.

Work is scheduled for Monday, November 16. Day shifts will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. Night work may take place during later phases of the project. The city notes that periodic lane closures will be necessary, but the contractor will keep at least one lane open in each direction at all times.

The number of closed lanes may vary depending on the specific task being performed. Motorists should expect possible traffic delays and plan for extra travel time. The city advises drivers to exercise caution, follow posted signs, and listen to instructions from Special Duty Police Officers and traffic control personnel.

The Department of Design and Construction can be reached at (808) 768-8400 for questions or comments about the project.
