Netflix confirmed on Thursday that a live-action prequel to Stranger Things will debut in 2028. The new series, titled Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, marks the next step for the franchise after its conclusion last year. Fans had long celebrated November 6 as a special day in honor of the date Will Byers disappeared in the original first season.
The announcement came during Netflix's Stranger Things Day event. The studio released a teaser alongside the news that revealed the new setting. The series takes place on April 19, 1955, in Marion, Nevada. This timeline positions the story before the events of the original television show and the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer, the creators of the original series, are producing the new show. They are joined by Kate Trefry, who serves as showrunner and wrote the stage play. Joe Wright, a BAFTA and Golden Globe-winning director, will helm the first three episodes. Production for the series is scheduled to take place in New Mexico.
In a press release, the Duffer brothers expressed excitement about the project. They described the series as thrillingly fresh with a new setting and new heroes and villains. The directors thanked their collaborators, specifically naming Trefry and Wright. They noted that Trefry has been with the team since season two and that Wright is a brilliant artist whose work they have long admired.
Trefry also issued a statement about the new chapter. She called it an insane honor and privilege to work alongside the Duffer brothers and Wright. She said the team enjoyed returning to the horror, wonder, and mystery of the original while telling a wholly new story. She invited viewers to welcome themselves to Other Worlds.
Stranger Things ended its run last year with a three-part final season. The first volume released on November 26, 2025. The second volume dropped on December 25, 2025. The two-hour series finale premiered on December 31, 2025.
