Matt Damon shared details of a medical emergency that his wife, Luciana Damon, faced just before the 2024 Academy Awards.

In a new interview with GQ published on Thursday, the 56 year old actor said Luciana underwent surgery for a brain aneurysm one week before the ceremony. He described the event as a scary period for the couple. Damon noted that his wife had just enough energy to get out of bed for the first time on the night of the awards show.

The timeline of the incident connects to a previous memory for the actor. In 2007, Damon missed the in-person celebration for his film The Departed winning best picture. He was in Miami shooting second unit for The Bourne Ultimatum while caring for an infant. He recalled jumping up and down in his bedroom after Martin Scorsese won best director, only to realize he had not been present for the moment.

Damon said he told his wife at the time that he totally blew it. Nearly two decades later, Luciana Damon used that memory to push for a joint appearance. She got dressed in a formal outfit and joined him at an after-party honoring Oppenheimer. The film had just received seven awards, including best picture. She told him that this time they were going out together.

Damon did not specify whether the aneurysm had ruptured or provide further medical details about the procedure. He called his wife's decision to attend the event heroic and meaningful. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke notes that a brain aneurysm is a bulge in an artery wall that can lead to stroke or death if it ruptures.

The actor stated that his wife is now totally fine. He highlighted the contrast between his 2007 absence and his 2024 presence at the celebration. The GQ interview provides a rare personal look at the health challenges surrounding the production and award season for his latest major role.
