Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey will generate another wave of ticket sales, with Universal Pictures announcing a nationwide rerelease for Dec. 11. The film has already earned $626 million at the domestic box office and $1.8 billion globally since its initial run.
The reissue will screen in more than 1,000 North American theaters. It will be available in all formats, including IMAX and IMAX 70mm. This follows an extended 70mm IMAX run that lasted throughout September.
The timing of the return coincides with the start of the awards season. The film is currently positioned for consideration at the Academy Awards. It holds the record as the highest-grossing R-rated movie in history.
The Odyssey is the first feature film shot entirely with IMAX cameras. It opened in theaters on July 17. Matt Damon plays Odysseus, the Greek hero who spends 10 years traveling home to Ithaca after the Trojan War.
The cast also includes Robert Pattinson, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong'o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron. In the story, Odysseus struggles to return to his wife Penelope and his son Telemachus, who defends his father's throne from suitors.
The film's domestic total of $626 million reflects its performance since opening in July. The global figure of $1.8 billion includes international markets. Universal plans to show the movie in standard and premium large-format venues during the December window.
