Bend authorities released a 911 recording Tuesday from the father who fatally shot the 16-year-old student who killed four people at Silver Rail Elementary School last month. The audio, which lasts just over one minute, provides new details on the moments before the gunman entered the building.

Kaylub Giamanco placed the call while driving home for lunch. He told the dispatcher that someone with a gun was at the school where his daughter is a student. Giamanco stated that he had a gun and would shoot the intruder immediately. The operator urged him to wait for an officer, but the two speakers often talked over each other.

As the call continued, Giamanco’s frustration grew. He told the operator, “I’m about to go kill this kid.” A few seconds later, he reported that the shooter was entering the building. When asked if the intruder was firing, Giamanco answered yes before the call ended.

The shooting occurred on Oct. 15. Police determined that a 16-year-old former student entered the school and fired into a special needs classroom. Teacher Megan Lambert, 25, and students Rhoam Summer, 5, and two other children, ages 8 and 11, were killed. The shooter was also killed in the incident.

Teacher Becky Drury and a 7-year-old girl were shot but survived. Bend-La Pine Schools announced on Monday that students will return to Silver Rail Elementary School on Thursday, Nov. 12.

The release of the call offers the public a direct account of the father’s actions during the crisis. Giamanco’s decision to engage the shooter with his own firearm resulted in the attacker’s death.
