Manchester United trailed by two goals after just 17 minutes of Tuesday night's Champions League match against AS Roma, a deficit that left manager Michael Carrick facing his fifth defeat in six games. The scoreline flipped to 3-2 in Manchester United's favor in the final ten minutes, a sequence of events that has temporarily halted the calls for Carrick's removal from the Old Trafford dugout.
The turnaround began when Bruno Fernandes converted a retaken penalty in the 57th minute. The initial kick was saved by Roma goalkeeper Devis Vásquez but was awarded again after referee Jesus Gil Manzano cited encroachment. Fernandes smashed the second attempt past Vásquez to reduce the deficit to 2-1. United equalized in the 83rd minute when Matheus Cunha finished a cross from Fernandes. Cunha added the winning goal moments later after receiving a precise pass from 19-year-old winger Shea Lacey, who entered the match in the 75th minute.
Cunha's performance was pivotal but ended in controversy. He celebrated his second goal by jumping into the crowd, drawing a yellow card from the referee. In stoppage time, the Brazil forward received a second yellow for a foul on Leonardo Balerdi, leaving United with ten players for the final seconds of the match. The team held on to secure their first victory since September 10.
Carrick, 45, has endured a nine-game winless run prior to this result. The win ensures he remains in charge for Sunday's Premier League fixture against Aston Villa. However, the manager faces a difficult stretch ahead with matches against Villa at home and a trip to Liverpool. United officials had hoped Carrick could withstand the recent slump, and this result provides a brief reprieve before the next test.
The victory came with a physical cost. Cameroon midfielder Carlos Baleba suffered a hamstring injury 37 seconds into the second half. He was seen in tears as medical staff attended to him on the pitch. His absence adds to the squad's injury list, which already includes Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw.
Supporters continued their protests against the club's ownership. Fans in the Stretford End released hundreds of green and gold balloons before kickoff and threw tennis balls onto the field. The demonstrations target the Glazer family, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, and Jason Wilcox, reflecting frustration with the board's management of the club's finances and squad depth.
