Thomas Markle, the father of Meghan Markle, was arrested in Florida on Friday morning. Federal authorities charged the 82-year-old man with one count of possession of child pornography. He is scheduled to appear in court in Tampa later on Friday.
The arrest took place at a retirement home in Lakeland, Florida, where Markle resides. FBI agents took him into custody early on Friday. US Attorney Bill Essayli confirmed the charges in a statement. He described the allegations as extremely serious. The Department of Justice said it will prosecute the case to the fullest extent of federal law.
Officials allege that Markle stored child sexual abuse material in two storage units in the Los Angeles area. He rented these units for nearly two decades. The Justice Department stated the materials included sexually explicit photographs of Markle with prepubescent girls. Essayli noted that the suspected images depicted Markle with minor girls.
Agents seized approximately 78 items from the storage units during the search. These items included slides, film negatives, and books containing suspected material. Investigators also reportedly found similar images at Markle's former home in the Philippines and at a storage unit in Mexico.
The potential prison sentence for a conviction on the possession charge is up to 20 years. Markle had been living in Cebu, Philippines, until he returned to the United States earlier this year. His son, Thomas Markle Jr., discovered the images while sorting through boxes in the former Philippine residence.
Meghan Markle commented on the accusations last month. She described herself as deeply distressed by the news. She stated that she had blocked contact between her father and her children due to previous troubling and disturbing allegations. The British tabloid The Sun reported on the son's discovery last month.
Prince Harry, Meghan's husband and the second son of King Charles III, married Meghan at Windsor Castle in May 2018. The couple stepped down from royal duties in 2020. They made an unexpected return to the United Kingdom with their two children in August.
The case rests on the physical evidence seized from the long-term storage units. The federal government asserts the material constitutes child sexual abuse images. Markle's legal team has not yet provided a public response to the initial court filing.
