Drivers in Spearfish must adjust their routes beginning Monday, November 9, as the final phase of a $1.3 million intersection improvement project commences at Interstate 90 Exit 10. The South Dakota Department of Transportation is closing specific movements to build a new median and turn lane along North Avenue.
The construction creates immediate changes for local traffic. Left turns from Old Highway 14 onto North Avenue are restricted. Additionally, northbound drivers on North Avenue cannot turn left onto Old Highway 14 during the work period. All entrance and exit ramps for Interstate 90 at Exit 10 will remain open to traffic.
The project began with the installation of a paved U-turn area, referred to by the department as a loon, to provide a safer option for drivers needing to turn around near the interchange. This infrastructure was completed prior to the start of the current median work.
Tru-Form Construction of Black Hawk is executing the final phase of the project. The company is scheduled to complete the work by November 20. During this period, motorists should reduce speed and monitor for shifting traffic patterns within the construction zone.
For drivers who require access to Old Highway 14, the department recommends using Exit 8 as an alternate route. New traffic signals for the eastbound off-ramp and North Avenue are also part of the project plan, with installation expected in January.
