A dry cold front will move through north central Alabama by Friday evening, bringing a sharp drop in temperature. The weather service predicts lows will fall into the lower to middle 40s overnight. Residents in colder locations should prepare for the possibility of patchy frost by Sunday morning.

Friday began with comfortable conditions. Afternoon highs reached the lower to middle 70s around 2 p.m. under plenty of sunshine. As the front arrived, temperatures dropped to the lower 60s by 6 p.m. and the middle 50s by 9 p.m. Skies remained mostly clear during the overnight hours.

The forecast advises people attending evening events, such as high school football games, to bring a jacket. Saturday is expected to be a good day for outdoor activities. Mornings will start in the 40s, but sunshine should push afternoon highs into the middle 60s.

At the Moss Rock Festival, temperatures were projected to be 53 degrees at 9 a.m. The weather service expects it to warm to 60 degrees by noon and 63 degrees by 3 p.m. By 5 p.m., readings should settle back around 59 degrees.

Sunday will feature another sunny afternoon with highs in the upper 60s. The primary concern is the cold morning. Some of the region's coldest spots could dip into the 30s early in the day. A second round of frost may form on Monday morning, with some typically cold areas approaching freezing temperatures.

Temperatures are expected to moderate as the week progresses. Afternoon highs should return to around 70 degrees on Monday and stay near that level through Thursday. Morning lows will generally remain in the 40s, though frost may still occur in the coldest spots early in the week.

The seven-day forecast shows an extended stretch of dry weather with ample sunshine. No significant chance of rain is currently indicated. The cold front marks the end of a warmer period, transitioning the region into a drier, cooler pattern for the coming days.
