Former Vice President Kamala Harris called for voter participation so high that it becomes impossible for opponents to manipulate results. Speaking at the Elizabeth Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia, she warned that President Donald Trump might attempt to interfere in the upcoming elections. She adopted a slogan similar to one used by the current president, stating that the nation simply needs a turnout large enough to make tampering difficult.
Harris spent the final days of the midterm campaign season visiting seven states. Her itinerary included early presidential primary states such as Nevada, New Hampshire, and Michigan. She also traveled to Mississippi to support U.S. Senate candidate Scott Colom. The trip concluded with a two day visit to Georgia, where she focused on the region's political history and current challenges.
During her stops, Harris repeatedly told audiences that it was time to turn anger into action. She acknowledged the emotional toll of the last year and a half, listing feelings of rage, depression, and frustration that many supporters had experienced. At a dinner for Democrats in Atlanta, she argued that the party must no longer let procedure block progress. She emphasized that the focus should be on the will to use power to keep commitments rather than on cruelty.
The former California senator outlined specific structural changes she believes are necessary to revitalize the American democracy. She called for expanding the U.S. Supreme Court, granting statehood to the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, and reconsidering the Electoral College. Harris described these as essential tasks for the party to govern with decisiveness.
She also addressed the issue of racial equity in voting. Harris accused the Supreme Court of implicit racism for dismantling the Voting Rights Act. She noted that this decision allowed Republicans to redistrict congressional boundaries in ways that often dilute the influence of non white legislators. She encouraged Black voters to honor their ancestors by casting their ballots.
Reactions from attendees at a fundraising gala for the Fulton County Democratic Party in Atlanta were positive. Melinda Johnson, a retired nurse who attended the event, said Harris was hitting the mark. Harris has maintained a critical stance toward Trump since her defeat in the presidential election. She has described him as insensitive, corrupt, and incompetent, and referred to him as the chief decorator due to his renovations of the White House.
Harris positioned her current activity alongside the efforts of other political figures like former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. She also joined the ranks of potential future contenders such as California Governor Gavin Newsom, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio Cortez. In Mississippi, she declared that the South is in play. She argued that Democrats can win in the region if they invest in it properly.
