Tampa Bay Lightning general manager Julien BriseBois now faces a restructuring of the roster after Nikita Kucherov requested a trade.

The move ends a period of stability for one of the NHL's most successful franchises. Kucherov informed the organization Friday that he will not re-sign with Tampa Bay. A person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press that the talks were private, which is why they spoke on condition of anonymity. Sportsnet initially reported the news. The Lightning did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

Kucherov signed an eight-year, $76 million contract in 2018. That deal expires at the end of this season, making him an unrestricted free agent. During that timeframe, he helped Tampa Bay win two Stanley Cups and led the league in scoring three times. He also received the Hart Trophy as the league's most valuable player in the 2018-19 and 2025-26 seasons.

BriseBois previously described Kucherov as a historically great player. In a press conference last month, the general manager stated that Kucherov is likely the best player in the world right now. BriseBois said in mid-September that the goal was to sign Kucherov to a new deal to keep him in Tampa for years. He noted that he and Kucherov's agent, Dan Milstein, kept communication lines open. BriseBois expressed belief that Kucherov would remain elite well into his 30s.

Kucherov has 1,139 points in 891 regular-season games since his 2013 debut. That total ranks third among all players over that span, behind only Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon. His 177 playoff points during the same period are the most in the league. Last weekend, the 33-year-old winger became the franchise's career points leader, passing Steven Stamkos. Through 12 games this season, he has 15 points, which is second on the team behind Brandon Hagel.

Kucherov's departure follows a trend of high-profile trades. Brady Tkachuk moved from Ottawa to Florida, and Connor Hellebuyck went from Winnipeg to New Jersey. Dylan Larkin remains in limbo with Detroit. Unlike those players, Kucherov has no time left on his current contract. His exit threatens to upend a run of success that has defined the Lightning since the salary cap era began in 2005.

The Lightning have made the playoffs 12 times in the last 13 seasons. They reached the final four times with Kucherov and Victor Hedman at the center of their core. The team has been eliminated in the first round in each of the past four years.
