Twenty-five buses and ambulances are staged in Armyansk for a humanitarian mission into Oleshky scheduled for later this Friday. The operation aims to deliver food and medicine to a city that has been cut off by fighting and mined roads.
Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine's ombudsman, confirmed the convoy's readiness. He stated the group's primary goal is ensuring aid reaches every resident in need, with specific focus on the elderly and those with disabilities. Lubinets noted the vehicles are positioned in Armyansk, a town in Russian-occupied southern Ukraine located approximately 53 miles south of the target city.
The temporary truce and the aid route were arranged by U.S. First Lady Melania Trump. She facilitated discussions between Lubinets and his Russian counterpart, Yana Lantratova. This diplomatic effort stands in contrast to previous attempts at ceasefires, which often collapsed shortly after being agreed upon.
Oleshky is situated just inside Russian-occupied territory in the Kherson region. The city gained international attention in recent weeks as residents became stranded and resources depleted. The conflict in the area has persisted since Russia's full-scale invasion began more than four and a half years ago.
Both Moscow and Kyiv have maintained the localized ceasefire in and around Oleshky since Tuesday. Despite this pause, the two nations remain fully engaged in the wider war. The current arrangement allows for the movement of the aid convoy without active combat in the immediate vicinity.
The delivery mission represents a direct response to the isolation faced by Oleshky's population. The convoy's departure from Armyansk marks the first physical step of the aid plan brokered by Trump. The success of the Friday delivery will be measured by the amount of supplies reaching the city's residents.
