Junior Caminero of the Tampa Bay Rays and Pete Crow-Armstrong of the Chicago Cubs are the top contenders for the Major League Baseball Most Valuable Player award, according to announcements made by MLB Network on Monday. The organization named three finalists for each league, with voting conducted by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Winners for all categories will be revealed in the next two weeks, with MVPs announced on November 12.
Caminero, who helped the Rays reach the World Series, faces competition from Yordan Alvarez of the Houston Astros and Bobby Witt Jr. of the Kansas City Royals in the American League. Alvarez led the major leagues with a .316 batting average, 42 home runs, and 106 runs batted in. Witt posted a .281 average with 18 home runs, 54 RBIs, and 45 stolen bases. Caminero batted .276 with 42 home runs and 101 RBIs during the regular season.
In the National League, Crow-Armstrong is paired with Brice Turang of the Milwaukee Brewers and Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Crow-Armstrong tied for the major league lead with 45 home runs, added 107 RBIs, and batted .280. Turang hit .268 with 21 home runs and 100 RBIs. Ohtani batted .275 with 30 home runs and 81 RBIs while also going 8-2 with a 1.79 earned run average in 14 starts.
Ohtani's pitching stint ended early due to injuries sustained in the second half of the season. He did not pitch after July 3. Turang and Ohtani represent a strong field against Crow-Armstrong, whose power numbers placed him at the top of the statistical rankings.
Jacob Misiorowski of the Milwaukee Brewers is the heavy favorite for the National League Cy Young Award. The right-hander led the majors with a 1.80 earned run average, a 0.80 walks plus hits per inning pitched mark, and 252 strikeouts. He finished the season with a 16-5 record. Chris Sale of the Atlanta Braves and Cristopher Sanchez of the Philadelphia Phillies are the other finalists in that category.
Misiorowski credited his support system for his success during an interview with MLB Network. "The biggest thing was just believing in yourself and trusting people around you to help you with anything that happens in this game," he said. In the American League, Cam Schlittler of the New York Yankees is the top contender after posting the second-best ERA in the majors at 1.95 and a 14-6 record.
Pat Murphy of the Brewers is a finalist for the National League Manager of the Year award, seeking a third consecutive honor. Milwaukee led the majors with 103 wins before winning the World Series. In the American League, Will Venable of the Chicago White Sox is a candidate after guiding his team to 84 wins and a postseason berth, a sharp reversal from three straight seasons of 100-plus losses. Kevin Cash of the Tampa Bay Rays and Chad Tracy of the Boston Red Sox round out the American League finalists.
Sal Stewart of the Cincinnati Reds is the prohibitive favorite for the National League Rookie of the Year award. He finished with 32 home runs, 111 RBIs, and a .263 batting average. The other finalists are Carson Benge of the New York Mets and JJ Wetherholt of the St. Louis Cardinals. Rookie winners will be announced on November 9, ahead of the manager and pitcher awards later in the month.
