Three major trades have altered the landscape for NHL playoff contenders this month. The Seattle Kraken and Nashville Predators completed a one-for-one swap on November 1, exchanging winger Matthew Wood for center Shane Wright. Both teams are currently competing for postseason berths. The move pits two players in their early twenties against each other in new environments.

The statistical case for the swap is close. Wood has recorded three points in 14 games this season. Wright has four points in the same span. However, Wright brings a proven scoring record to Nashville. He finished the 2024-25 campaign with 19 goals and 44 points. That performance followed a stop-start development history that limited him to 16 NHL games over the previous two years. He also recorded double-figure goal totals in back-to-back seasons while playing for a team that ranked in the bottom ten for goals per game.

Nashville plans to slot Wright onto the second line as a center. He will share the position with Ryan O'Reilly, Jack Drury, and Alexander Kerfoot. The Predators aim to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2024. In that previous appearance, they were eliminated in the first round. Acquiring Wright addresses a need for depth in the middle of the ice.

Seattle gains a physical winger in Wood. The former University of Connecticut star stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 202 pounds. He scored 17 goals and 30 points during his first full NHL season in 2025-26. The Kraken currently rely on depth options like Berkly Catton and Frederick Gaudreau. Chandler Stephenson leads the team with 12 points in 14 games, despite playing out of position at wing. Adding Wood provides a natural winger who can utilize his size at the net front.

These deals follow a major transaction involving the New Jersey Devils. On October 23, the Devils acquired goaltender Connor Hellebuyck from the Winnipeg Jets. The trade sent forwards Dawson Mercer and Nick Bjugstad, goaltender Nico Daws, and prospect center Alexander Command to Winnipeg. New Jersey also received a 2027 seventh-round pick and a 2029 second-round pick.

The Devils needed a starting goalie after a rough start to the season. They held the second Eastern Conference wild-card spot before the trade. Their defensive structure was strong, allowing the second-fewest high-danger scoring chances per 60 minutes. However, their goaltending was a weak point, with a 13th-lowest team save percentage in 5-on-5 play. Hellebuyck, a three-time Vezina Trophy winner, brings stability to a system that controls the puck well.

Winnipeg receives Mercer as a key offensive addition. The Jets ranked 25th in goals per game at the time of the trade. Mercer, a three-time 20-goal scorer, is expected to relieve pressure on Kyle Connor and Mark Scheifele. Winnipeg is tied with the Colorado Avalanche for the final Western Conference wild-card spot. The Jets have lost their past four games and sit at a minus-3 goal differential.
